OK.. My bad. It seems last time I twiddled with "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" I turned on "Autohinting". Bad idea. It makes things fugly. Native is a much better idea. Regards

Ubuntu documentation

There are many reasons that WLUG recommend Ubuntu as a distribution for new and experiences Linux users alike. The one I'd like to point out today is the excellent documentation that is available. http://help.ubuntu.com/ has PDF and HTML versions of guidebooks for the new 6.06 release, covering all variants (GNOME, KDE, XFCE), as well as Ubuntu Server and packaging. The documentation is available under the GNU Free Documentation License, so you can download it and print it yourself, as well as distribute it freely. A company called Lulu are making printed versions available by money-and-postage (http://www.lulu.com/ubuntu-doc), but I imagine shipping to New Zealand would be prohibitive. If enough people are interested, WLUG could investigate having some copies printed and bound, and made available to members at cost. Craig

Open Office

To the WLUG, Howdy! Here's my first question. (BTW I am a novice Linux/ubuntu user -- dual boot and work with Windows networks) I am a Domain Admin trying to access Windows shares ( I have full access). That works fine. I've been using OpenOffice to open Microsoft documents, edit them, and save changes. This has worked fine for 2 weeks. Now, when I try to open these documents, the OpenOffice program starts launching, but never opens the document (or OpenOffice itself). This just started happening today, so it seems like a freak occurence. Some help would be great. Hohua (aka Josh) tech(a)iblp.org.nz

Has anyone else noticed in Ubuntu 6.06 that their fonts are all foo. As in rendering all weird and ugly. Especially in Firefox & Thunderbird. Regards

A comment based on this mornings discussion: If something in an e-mail doesn't work for you, it's probably better to send a reply to the sender directly (off-list). This means the person can correct the link or solve the problem, without sending a discussion to all the subscribers that, by the time they get the messages, has become irrelevant. Craig

I suspect someone might like to arrange a NZ mirror? Craig

Openfiler

Some discussions have come about adding another server to reduce the pressure on our existing server. I don't generally make any of the decisions regarding our computer network but a suggestion was made regarding a program/server/technology called openfiler. Given that I am the known open source advocate around here, the question was asked, what did I know about it and did anyone in the wlug have any experience of using it. I assumed it was a software package but its seems is a customized version of a Ret Hat derivate CentOS. http://www.openfiler.org Having a Linux server on the network would definitely be a foot in the door for Linux based software within our company but it would good if the first experience within the company was positive and straightforward. Any comments or does openfiler provide a nice gui install for setting up a network server that could also be acheived using other modern distro? Cheers Chris
