An Intel HAM PCI modem is a very good option (if it is interent you are trying to achive) you can get them fairly cheeply from DSE (and DSE support linux somewhat) (that is, if you want to open the pc up and do some hardware shuffling)

Its a brand new computer and I couldnt get scanmodem to detect it, thats why I tried to install a USB modem instead. I can supply output of the scanmodem program if required.
