If you want to do it in the command line, you can use 'ftp' or 'ncftp'. If you want to do it in a GUI environment, 'gftp' or 'filezilla' are what I would recommend. I use gftp myself.
Obviously, you'll need to know the ftp server, user name and password. If you don't know these, contact your hosting company.

hey simon, i have downloaded FTPzilla using synaptic. I know the host, username and password. I have been able to transfer two images and two files (index.html and glenn.css) to the remote server. where I am struggling is although I have transferred them, there is no trace of them when I http://gmorrissey.kol.co.nz. All I get is a folder called CGI-bin and nothing else.

You'll probably need to contact your hosting provider about it. One thought though, when you log in, if you see a public_html directory, you'll need to upload the files into that directory, and not the root directory.

Similary check the permission of the files you have saved on the server. Make sure all users have read access.
