Hi Wlug,
I was at the fixiit meeting today and asked Bruce how to install my PDF reader from Adobe. I think he said I should be able to read PDF files with Xsane. However I dont' have a scanner and the application won;t run.
What next?

If you use Gnome (default with Ubuntu), it comes with evince with can be used to view PDF files. Simply ciicking on a PDF file in nautilus will open the file. If for some reason you really want to use Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can follow these instructions:

Again, I'm assuming you are using Ubuntu.
I installed Adobe Acrobat Reader using the installer from Adobe. It worked perfectly fine, and I think it also allowed viewing PDFs within Firefox.

Thanks for your help I have got it sorted. I can open them with Document Viewer by right clicking in the search files utility. now. The Adobe download didn't install, error "not i386 archetiture" so I am giving it up for lost for now.

I really, STRONGLY advise against using Adobe's proprietary bloatware. Adobe's reader is 43M, evince (including libraries) is less than half a meg. And evince has a lot more useful functionality (not just less anti-features)

evince is called "Document Viewer" in Ubuntu. You're already using it.
Right-click on one of your PDF documents and select "Properties" (the last option on the menu) Then select the "Open With" tab. Click the radio button circle next to Document Viewer. (If Document viewer is not on the list, click Add and add it from the list of available applications) then click the "Close" button.
From then on you should be able to read ANY PDF simply by
double-clicking it's icon.

I agree with the bloatware, but I'm not sure whether evince, kpdf or okular support Adobe forms. Depending on that, you might have to bite the bullet.

If you are running Ubuntu or Debian and cannot open the PDF file simply by clicking on it, it is exceptionally likely that it is simply NOT a PDF file. You have most likely downloaded an interstitial page or 404 error instead of the PDF file you wanted.
The first workshop we ever ran, I had a user turn up who had spend the last few days (it may have been weeks) trying to compile a PDF reader from source in Ubuntu. It turned out that the PDF file he had downloaded was corrupt and when we downloaded it again correctly it opened immediately in evince.
another possibility is that pdf's have somehow become unassociated with evince. Right click on your 'pdf' file and select properties, make sure it is actually a pdf file, go to 'open with' and make sure that it's trying to open it with evince.

Just checking here, in Debian (and presumably Ubuntu) the correct program is called "Document Viewer" -- the icon for it is the letter 'e' drawn in a similar style to Acrobat's letter A logo.

It should be installed by default (in any reasonable distro) and you just double-click a pdf file to open it.
