I'm thinking of upgrading my monitor to an Lcd . I want it for editing photographs with the Gimp . Are there any problem's to watch out for? I am running Ubuntu Feisty. What Hardware would you recommend. Are any monitors software dependent , I am only looking for a 17 inch monitor.

To be honest, unless you have a pretty tight budget 17" is small for graphics work. I have a 19" at home and keep running out of room :p. Also, you may get just as good an item from lesser known brands. Just make sure to do your homework. I'm running a Hanns.G which is quite nice, although the built in speakers are a waste of time.
AFAIK monitors should be plug and play. You might need to think about the sort of plug it has, DVI (which standard) or analogue. Ask some of the local manuafcturing shops nicely such as Millenium and PBTech what lines they use, they may have some suggestions to get you started.
It goes without saying that in normally you get what you pay for...

I have got my new monitor and am unable to change my Screen Resolution from 1024x768 at 61HZ to the
recommended 1280 x 1024 at 60 HZ I used the graphical screen resolution tool but it didn't give me that option I am using Ubuntu Feisty 7.04
I am at work at the moment, so I can't check for you, but I remember having to edit xorg.conf and manually putting in my resolution and refresh rate.

Here's an easier way to do it:
Go to a command prompt and type: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Once you've selected all the right options and it's finished: - save any information - Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace - login - choose your resolution
This fixed things for my Ubuntu PC

Well I went to look at Ubuntu bugs to see if this is recognised as a problem (setting up monitors) and see it's longest outstanding critical bug apart from #1. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs
