I just finished watching the video http://saimei.acc.umu.se/pub/debian-meetings/2016/debconf16/systemd_in_Debian_a_status_update.webm. At 22 minutes, I think it’s well worth the time. If you think systemd is overcomplicated, Michael Biebl’s presentation should give you some idea of the troubles that earlier, more simplistic init systems run into, that systemd solves.
