Hi there
Just came across this very good article on linux.com covering the commandline tool "top": http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/42048-uncover-the-meaning-of-tops-stati...
I'll have to admit, most of the times I only use "top" to see what process is sucking up all that CPU again... :-)

Cheers, Ill admit to only using to see what process is hogging the cpu and/or ram. Htop provides a much more friendly layout while maintaining all (I think) of the data from top
