I've been down to the library and my wireless works just fine, Also if the laptop is booted off the live cd Jaunty it works correctly with the wired broadband. I ran software updates and after that the wired internet wouldn't work. On googling for solutions I have found a number of people are having similar problems but I haven't found a solution that I can get to work . Thanks to those people who replied to my original post.
