hi
thought this conference sounded pertinent to the ada agenda & it looks like
there will be a web stream of it from
http://freebitflows.t0.or.at/f/livestreaming but it's hard to tell exactly
because the website's crazy blue and black. it looks like the stream would be
thursday 3rd & friday 4th, 2-7pm of june vienna time, so could happen in the
middle of the night here? not a good time to listent to a conference, but is
anyone on the list able to automatically set their computer to record the
stream?
---
THE INTERNET came with a promise that "everybody can be a publisher".
Although not everybody wants to be a publisher, those who actually do,
find it hard to make it work. As it turns out, this promise is only true
in an extremely limited, technical sense.
Yes, I can set up a website, or put my song on the Net, but
what next? The problem becomes not so much technical as social
-- there is a lot of sharing, but little in terms of making
a living. Money remains squarely in the hands of the old
industry.
The issue of distribution is not just an economic question. It's also
a political one. At stake is the 'semiotic democracy', that is the
ability of the largest number of people to create and share culture
freely. It is about making sure that despite of heavy-hitting marketing
machines, new, independent content can still fill its audience.
In short, the question is how do innovative production
and distribution come together to support each other.
Free Software seems to have found a way to do just that,
but what about the rest of cultural production? How do
we get from technological visions to actual cultures that
are open yet sustainable in a climate where funding runs short?
FreeBitflows will bring together artists, researchers, activists,
and hackers from Europe and beyond to investigate current strategies
to build sustainable, open and experimental cultures through
electronic media. A conference, workshops, performances and
an exhibition will examine cultures of access and the politics of
dissemination from a broad range of perspectives.

re: Entries open for Vodafone Digital Art Awards
So these are the categorys:
Still Image, Moving Image, Net Art and PXT/Video PXT.
While it is great news that such an awards has been created I find it
hugely ironic that a company who primarily make their profits from
the use of digitial sound, totally neglects to include Digital Sound
as a category in the Digtal Art Awards. I would very much like an
explantion as to how such an omission could occur and have sent such
a request to the organisers... I will report back their response.....
IMHO the Ars Electronica Festival/Awards are a role model they maybe
should have considered:
http://www.aec.at
CATEGORIES
COMPUTERANIMATION / VISUAL EFFECTS
The "Computer Animation / Visual Effects" category has been part of
the Prix Ars Electronica since its very inception. It recognizes
excellence in independent work in the arts and sciences as well as in
high-end commercial productions in the film, advertising and
entertainment industries. In this category, artistic originality
counts just as much as masterful technical achievement.
DIGITAL MUSICS
Contemporary digital sound productions from the broad spectrum of
"electronica" come in for consideration in the "Digital Musics"
category, as do works combining sound and media, computer
compositions ranging from electro-acoustic to experimental music, or
sound installations. This category's programmatic agenda is to expand
horizons beyond the confines of individual genres and artistic
currents.
INTERACTIVE ART
The "Interactive Art" category is dedicated to interactive works in
all forms and formats, from installations to performances. Here,
particular consideration is given to the realization of a powerful
artistic concept through the especially appropriate use of
technologies, the innovativeness of the interaction design, and the
work's inherent potential to expand the human radius of action.
NET VISION
The "Net Vision" category singles out for recognition artistic
projects in the Internet that display brilliance in how they have
been engineered, designed and-especially-conceived, works that are
outstanding with respect to innovation, interface design and the
originality of their content. The way in which a work of net-based
art deals with the online medium is essential in this category.
DIGITAL COMMUNITIES
To mark its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2004, Ars Electronica has
expanded its international competition for cyberarts to include a new
category called "Digital Communities." To match the broad spectrum of
projects two Golden Nicas will be bestowed in this new category
focusing on works of great sociopolitical relevance. "Digital
Communities" encompasses the wide-ranging social consequences of the
Internet as well as the latest developments in the domain of mobile
communications and wireless networks. "Digital Communities" will
spotlight bold and inspired innovations impacting human coexistence,
bridging the digital divide regarding gender as well as geography, or
creating outstanding social software and enhancing accessibility of
technological-social infrastructure. This new category will showcase
the political potential of digital and networked systems and is thus
designed as a forum for the consideration of a broad spectrum of
projects, programs, initiatives and phenomena in which social
innovation is taking place, as it were, in real time.

"Operation Flatbush is a crazily simple idea for a global musical protest
against George W Bush. It has just been taken up by Radio Left in the United
States (a radio network which combats the Right Wing shock jocks who
dominate the airwaves). "
i remember doing something similar at school when we had to all bite into an
apple to make a huge crunch noise around the country at the same time except
that was part of a campaign for eating healthy and this is more important so
maybe it will work better :>
--
Operation Flatbush is a project for a peaceful global protest against George W
Bush when he is renominated as his party's candidate for President on Thursday
September 2. The protest will be so mighty but at the same time so original
that the American media will be unable to ignore it. At the very moment when
his supporters will aim to saturate the media with images of Bush in triumph
American voters would be reminded of the hostility and scorn he has inspired
across the world as well as in the United States.
When Bush is formally renominated, musicians in every country and every time
zone would lead people in playing, singing or chanting the same chord of B
flat minor. There is no special significance in this chord, but played en masse
and sustained for at least two minutes it would sound fittingly solemn and
mournful: a dirge for democracy. It would also be easy enough for all manner of
people to play or sing the full chord or one of its component notes: B flat, D
flat or F.
It would be quite simply the biggest chord in history and the biggest
demonstration, with no limit to its potential participants. No one need go out
into the street. People of any age could join the chord against Bush at home or
at work, using any instrument or simply their own voices.
Unlike most conventional protests, Operation Flatbush would need no costly
administration and make no interference with ordinary life. All it needs is
musicians of every kind prepared to play exactly the same thing for a short
time on September 2 (or 3 in some time zones).
No matter how much they amplify George Bush's lies and fantasies in his
acceptance speech the giant chord could overpower them and send a simple
message about his dismal, dishonest and disastrous Presidency.

Leader of the British Labour party) and to Rt Hon Gerald Kaufman MP (then

when I sat down to play") but he could manage a chord of B flat minor.

Hi
Nice to read a flurry of Ada news
I have been looking forward to another meeting this year, and it would
be good to start floating an agenda/format?
Although I didn't know about the Graphite gig in Dunedin I have
tentatively approached my boss about hosting the Ada symposium in
Dunedin 2006 (Otago Uni), which seems to be fine, and I think it would
be great to time it alongside the Graphite conference.
As a reasonably regular traveller I agree with Adam that there would be
huge benefits to New Zealand new media artists both living in Aotaeroa
and outside of the country, in organising an event here. Research would
be needed to make sure we coincide with good times for northern
hemisphere travel.
Could this be one of the things we discuss in Auckland?
Would this year's Ada symposium please be able be in September so that
us further south can coincide with Vito Acconci?
that would be swell!

I understand that Graphite will be in Dunedin November 2005(see
http://www.anzgraph.org/graphite2003/submissions_digital.html and
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/sce/graphite2004/# for links to the last two art
shows/festivals). Although primarily technical in orientation, they do
have a strong digital art component.
Others in this group may know more about this event.

in March 2005 until the end of June 2005. We thank all those artists
who applied and Creative New Zealand who has supported the financing of
these projects.

This bit's for Sean:
Okey-doke. The fact that the University of Waikato got a grant towards 3
artists' residencies is public information already, as we publish the list
of grants within a week of notifying all applicants about the outcome of the
funding round. However, because the names of the proposed artists weren't in
your project description, that is still confidential until U of W makes an
announcement.
So what's left of your secret is still safe with me!
Creative NZ doesn't require you to make an announcement at all, though it's
nice when people do this as it keeps everyone in the loop.
This bit's for everyone:
By the way re: tomorrow, Elisabeth Vaneveld and I are convening a little
meeting at Mezze in Durham Lane at 9am for those people involved in phase 1
of the New Media sector reference group that CNZ convened last month. If you
are one of those people, please come along if you can make it.
If anyone else reading this is interested in finding out more about the work
CNZ is doing about NM, feel free to get in touch with me.
Also Aucklanders, I'll be in Ak during alt.music so if you are thinking of
applying to the July project funding round and you want to discuss your
application in person, I'm available then. Just email me if you want an
appointment.

hi Danielle
Adam is half of Radioqualia, who will be one of the digital artists in
residence this year, but as there hasn't been a public announcement of the

already knows
I've been out of the country for some time, so haven't been in the loopp
