VIDEOBRASIL OPENS SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 15TH EDITION OF THE FESTIVAL
15th Videobrasil International Electronic Art Festival
>From September 6 to 11 /// Exhibition runs until October 2, 2005
Submissions: http://www.videobrasil.org.br
Information: 15festival(a)videobrasil.org.br
SESC Pompéia - São Paulo /// http://www.sescsp.org.br
Submissions for the 15th Videobrasil International Electronic Art
Festival, promoted by SESC-SP, and supported by Prince Claus Fund,
are now open. This edition of the Festival will adopt a new structure
placing greater emphasis on research and production from the
so-called southern circuit. Works will be selected for three
exhibitions: "Contemporary investigations", "New vectors" and
"Southern panoramas". The first of these exhibitions will stress
innovation in research, while "New vectors" will focus on emergent
producers or groups. "Southern panoramas" aims to bring together
works that broaden the current state of southern production art. The
jury will award one piece from each exhibition, and other works will
be able to receive special mention.
The regulations and enrolment form are already available from the
Associação Cultural Videobrasil website and the deadline for
submissions is set for April 15, 2005. The selection committee will
assess work from Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, South-East Asia,
Eastern Europe, Middle East and Oceania. To make submission easier,
for the first time ever enrolment forms can be filled out directly
through the Associação's website. Off-line submissions sent via
normal mail will also be accepted.
The Festival was created in 1983 and is today the most important
electronic art event in the southern hemisphere. The exhibition aims
to stimulate research into new mediums and encourage interchange
among the nations of the southern circuit. Each edition of the
Festival brings retrospectives and especially commissioned works from
major names in global electronic art.

sul. As obras serão selecionadas para três mostras: "Investigações
contemporâneas", "Novos vetores" e "Panoramas do sul". A primeira

aceitas.
O Festival foi criado em 1983, e é hoje o mais importante evento de
arte eletrônica do hemisfério sul. A mostra estimula a investigação
de novos meios e o intercâmbio com países do circuito sul. A cada
edição o Festival comissiona obras e promove retrospectivas de nomes
importantes da arte eletrônica mundial.

Sondheim is one of the best-known and longest-established new media artists. Since 1994 he has been developing a huge project which he calls the "Internet Text", an "extended meditation on cyberspace"; and the "Sampler" DVD+ provides a representative cross-section of this work.

I'd be keen to hear some more about the Poly. Have you had any responses? If not, I've been told in the course of recent research (on specifically NZ developed gaming hardware) that there's a computer collector based in Palmerston North. (I can email you the details if you like.) Collectors are often extremely knowledgeable, so that might be one route to go down. I would be interested in hearing what you find out/what you are doing on this topic?
While I'm at it, I might as well forward the message I sent yesterday to the gamesnetwork list, requesting help with locating other researchers researching local histories of game development etc....in case anyone has any contacts they can help me out with or forward this onto. thanks in advance,
Melanie
--
Dear Gamesnetwork, (+ADAers, etc)
We are interested in making contact with people who are researching the local or regional histories of early game production and/or reception. And we'd like to enlist the network's help with this.
Relatively little is known about the local scenarios that provide a backdrop to the global rollout of games and games systems. We are researching aspects of the early days of digital gaming in New Zealand and Germany, and we know a little about early game systems produced in other regions. But we'd like to know more.
We would like to make contact with people who are also excavating some aspect/s of the local/regional histories of digital games. What are the histories of early game production etc in South America, Africa and Eastern Europe? We are currently looking for another speaker for an upcoming panel on this topic, but are also keen to make contact and exchange information more generally, and perhaps develop future projects.
We expect that this covers work on:
* local game hard- and software manufacture and reception;
* uneven patterns of hard or software distribution;
* DIY developments and local game cultures around these;
* The remembering, collection, preservation and archiving of these early games.
And there are no doubt more angles to this. If you're doing work in these or related areas, please send us an email and tell us about what you're doing.
Now for our request for help from the network:
We're particularly keen to get our message out to people who might not be linked in to existing game studies networks. If you know of anyone doing this type of research, and/or have contacts with game researchers or are on relevant lists, especially in regions of the world not currently well represented in DiGRA (eg. South America, Eastern Europe, Africa, etc), please consider forwarding our message on. (If it can be translated, so much the better!)
Thanks in advance,
Melanie Swalwell & Andreas Lange

Dear Ada'ers
Geeky stuff aside.... these are the really important bits...
(tho not quite up to the standards set by the ADA symposium banquet..)
Do any of you have a spare big coffee plunger, electric jug, or big
chilly bin?
We scored all this free Karajoz coffee at the Public Address blog do on
sunday, and it would be great if we could all drink it on saturday (to
make up for that early start) but we would need to borrow a big plunger
or two...
And maybe an electric jug? We have one, but we would probably need
another one or two.
And well, a chilly bin would mean the beer could be kinda coldish.
usually i would borrow this sort of stuff off my parents, but they're
in chch so that's not much use. sigh.
Would be lovely to see lots of ADA'ers at the fest!
(btw, there's heaps more stuff on the website now....)
