BLIT:SCREEN is a [webApp|system|artware] running on the
criticalartware platform. localized groups (collectives, clans,
classes, cabals etc.) sign up, register a mailing address + media
playback capabilities + then receive media from randomized sources
throughout the WWWorld. once a month, the BLIT:SCREEN system sends
each group an email with the mailing address of another group to
which to mail media. as a result, every group who participates in
this physical exchange receives a DVD-R or CD-R or VHS or VinylRecord
or any other media type delivered in any other appropriate format
from 01 other participating group every month. likewise every group
sends 01 instance of BLIT:SCREEN out to 01 group (whom BLIT:SCREEN
has suggested), thereby creating a deeply distributed + dynamic 01 to
01 network.
BLIT:SCREEN is both a distribution system + a distributed archive. in
this way the system is grid distribution + grid archiving. nothing is
prescribed about participating groups; a group might be a hacker
collective living in a squat, an experimental television station [+/
or] a professor collecting + distributing student work. media
distributed through BLIT:SCREEN could include completed projects,
artworks, raw materials for production+remix, critical txts,
unearthed archives, shared cultural resources, &c&c. the BLIT:SCREEN
system assumes no prescriptions [+/or] standards as to what
participants do with the material they receive, however, screening
+discussion+archiving are encouraged. BLIT:SCREEN draws connections
from the hystories + technologies of bicycling physical video tapes
during the early video art moment, {sneaker|floppy|walk}-nets +
onLine {communication|development} [channels/paths] in demoscenes +
BBS culture as well as {highlighting|suggesting} contemporary
possibilities for the role of decentralized distribution modalities +
resource sharing.
BLIT:SCREEN runs on the criticalartware applat ([application/
platform]). criticalartware develops new media discourse by engaging
early moments of {code|concept}-based experimental [media art/
artware], conversing with + interviewing those active in these early
moments ++ sharing cultural resources connecting these
conversations. criticalartware as a crew of core.developers is also
a [user/participant] in the BLIT:SCREEN system. as such
criticalartware core.dvrs will send, receive + BLIT:SCREEN media.
BLIT:SCREEN as a project has been initiated by criticalartware

commitment to open exchanges + criticalConspiracies.

Hello All,
Work has been progressing on the SCANZ residency/workshop event
including funding work, artist selections and a website we hope to
make public next week. So an update is well due to let you all know
some of the things coming up. One of the main things is our proposal
of having a series of discussions with the SCANZ artists, on the ADA
list.
To summarize the event -- SCANZ is a workshop-residency to be held in
New Plymouth for two weeks - July 3-16, 2006. It follows in the
tradition of the Solar/Polar Circuits which are also workshop
residencies, for artists' creative and professional development. In a
'boot camp for artists' sort of style, workshops and presentations
are given, skills are shared, work is developed and friendships
formed. The preliminary website in formulation will be sent out
shortly with further information.
SELECTED ARTISTS
Two open calls were made for project proposals - many thanks to all
who applied. The following artists were selected for the residency by
the project team of Ian Clothier, Mercedes Vincente, Deborah Lawler-
Dormer, John Fairclough and myself.

INTERCHANGE - ADA MINI-SYMPOSIUM & AUDIO FOUNDATION
With such a large and interesting group of artists being together, we
would like to allow for as much interchange with local practitioner
communities as possible. Hence we will be holding what we are calling
an ADA mini-symposium and workshop event during the final weekend of
the SCANZ residency - July 15-16th. It is anticipated that there will
be no boundaries between the two events on this weekend.
As there are a number of possible areas of interest for the Audio
Foundation practitioners as well, we plan to post updates to the AF-
list also. To prevent too much cross-posting during ADA-based
discussions, we would need to suggest that those interested to join
the discussion subscribe to ADA.
SCANZ ARTISTS ON ADA LIST DISCUSSIONS
As a way to initiate connections between the ADA community and SCANZ
artists, we would like to hold a series of introductions of the SCANZ
artists, on the list. It is most essentially an opportunity for
everyone to get to know each other's work and ideas, with the
possibility for some development time in there, before the
international guests arrive in New Zealand.
As there are 24 artists attending SCANZ, who will be working on 20
different projects we are proposing to stagger things into a set of
introductions to smaller artist groupings with a loosely topical
thread to them. The artists will then be asked to speak a little
further about their project and/or interests to the list - to
whatever degree they feel comfortable due to the stage of project
development they are at.
Depending on what (and who?) we all bring along to the discussions,
these sessions can be greatly expanded - we are open to any thoughts
and suggestions. Discussion guidance will be given by Ian, myself and
our Lead Inquirer, Sally McIntyre.
ADA SWARAYS
In association with Aotearoa Digital Arts, Helen Varley Jamieson and
Vicki Smith of Avatar Body Collision (ABC), myself and several
others, are planning to host several ‘soireés’ or online gatherings
to run alongside the ADA discussions. These are to be held in ABC’s
in-development browser-based software - UpStage <http://
www.upstage.org.nz/>. Upstage functions as a ‘stage’ where one can
join and bring in your own graphics for avatars, stage props, and
backgrounds. While this software is somewhat 'beta', it is a playful
social environment for people to get to know each other in a live
online format. We plan to hold three of these, the first in May, and
the last during the residency.
QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS?
Does anyone have any specific concerns or queries about what we are
proposing here? If so, please let us know either directly or via the
list, and as soon as you are able. As if it will make sense for all,
we would like that this phase could get rolling sometime in early April.
By the same token, if there are any suggestions or queries, we look
forward to hearing from you.
Thank you all --

Digital Resources in the Humanities and Arts Conference
The annual DRH Conference focuses on advanced research methods in the
creation and use of digital resources in the humanities including arts. This
year the conference at Dartington College of Arts in Devon (September
3rd-6th 2006) will be seeking to give a particular prominence to
practice-based proposals where digital work plays a significant role in
performances, exhibitions, recitals and studio-based demonstrations (dance,
drama, theatre, film, music, sound, moving image, photography, media, visual
arts, installations, Internet-based events, publishing, games etc).
The call for proposals - including details of how to apply and facilities on
offer at Dartington 2006 - will be issued shortly. The new emphasis will
offer opportunities to artists and practitioners working in various digital
areas in addition to the customary DRH range of academic papers addressing
themes and strategic issues that engagement with digital resources brings to
scholarly research in the arts and humanities.
DRH annual conferences - addressing the most relevant issues in the recent
and contemporary digital revolution in the arts and humanities - have
occurred annually since 1996. Their goal is to bring together creators,
users, distributors and custodians of digital resources in the arts and
humanities.
Please pass this notice on to likely interested parties and encourage them
to respond to the call for proposals.

Hi,
I'm looking for someone to do the php authoring for a form that gathers
cultural identification information, primarily via the internet. The form
uses drop down boxes, tick boxes (or radio buttons) and free text fields. It
must work across both Mac and PC platforms and be usable in Firefox,
Internet Explorer et al.
This is for the project 'Interrogating the invisible' which has been
selected for ISEA 2006/Zero One San Jose. The person who authors the form
will receive due acknowledgement. It's not a big ask, and could be good
exposure.
The remaining parts of the project will be done by other people.
Project aim
The Leistavian Federal Bureau of Information aims to interrogate the hidden
by gathering statistics on the culturally invisible of the Pacific Rim:
people of multiple and hybrid ethnicity.
The Leistavian FBI will create an online survey form which allows for the
input of multiple cultural identifications. Those that register one main
cultural identity will become a control group, while those that register
more than one cultural identification, in particular those with at least one
affiliation to a Pacific Rim nation, will be the target group. The form also
collects information on attitudes to cultural identification issues, and
uses drop down boxes, check boxes and free text fields to indicate audience
preference.
The data will be presented online as statistical summaries, in the
installation area as large scale vinyl imagery (non-rectangular, adhered
directly to the wall, where image component size registers survey
responses), and as a projected animation which registers change in survey
responses.
Anyone interested in doing the php work should contact me via email stating
their experience with writing such forms and providing examples if possible.
Send a CV if you have one at hand. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to
complete a short sample form in order to establish functionality as
required.
