The Australian Federal Government is pushing forward with a plan to
force Internet Service Providers [ISPs] to censor the Internet for all
Australians. This plan will waste tens of millions of taxpayer dollars
and slow down Internet access.
Despite being almost universally condemned by the public, ISPs, State
Governments, Media and censorship experts, Communications Minister
Stephen Conroy is determined to force this filter into your home.
ANAT urges all Australians to join in the protest against the plan.

Hi all,
I'm putting together a waka/bicycle tour down the Whanganui river in
February, taking in a few sites of counter cultural interest, and
hoping to make some work on the way.
We also invite people to come for just a day or 2 cycling or even join
us for camping on one of the community days around the weekend of
15th, 16th Feb.
Hope to see some of you there!
cheers

* Slowflow - Te Ia Korero
Info and registration at: http://greenbench.org/project/slowflow
Slowflow is a trip down the Whanganui River, Aotearoa/New Zealand
between Feb 10 th and Feb 16th 2009. Slowflow invites artists,
technologists and environmentalists on a 6 day journey down the
Whanganui River by double hulled 22 person waka haurua (canoe) and
bicycle, creating a setting for a flow of conversations - Te Ia
Korero.
Slowflow imagines living in a post carbon future where physical
transport has slowed to human speed, energy use is constrained and
renewable, production is collaborative and relocalised, and
information communication is instantaneous, global and
accessible. Taking a few days out from global hypermobility, slowflow
models the contemporary ecotopian dream as a mobile temporary
autonomous zone and paddles and cycles it through a landscape of
narratives.
The journey starts high up the Whanganui River beneath the volcano
Ruapehu and passes through the native bush for 3 days. Emerging from
the forest and shifting to bicycles, it continues to sites of counter
cultural interest, Jerusalem, the abandoned Ahu Ahu Ohu commune and
the Wanganui Police Computer, before reaching the river mouth and the
wider network of the sea.
On each day a local expert is invited to give a short talk about the
historical context of each site. Particpants are asked to bring a
project to make or experiment with on the trip. Whether it be a piece
of technology, a piece of media, an art work, doumentation of the
trip, or some writing, the collective commonwealth of works will
form the basis of an exhibition, a web site and a publication.

!! APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING !!
Dear Friends,
Mark Amerika says: Turbulence is a permanent part of the digital art and electronic literature curriculum I have developed at the University of Colorado and a major component of our special topics courses too. The students who pass through our media arts program are amazed at everything Turbulence has achieved over the years. A common response is something like I had no idea artists made work like this. And then, with a little more direction, they too begin making networked art projects. To us, Turbulence is one of the most important cultural institutions on the planet! (Helen) and Jo have single (double)-handedly played a huge role in making it possible for higher arts educators like myself to successfully teach the networked arts.
We know for a fact that many of you use our resources to teach digital art and new media. And many others have written to tell us how great an impact weve had on their careers. Please, show us how much we matter by making a donation right now.
2008 was our most active year yet. We launched 30 COMMISSIONED WORKS on Turbulence.org and Networked_Music_Review; co-presented two exhibitions MIXED REALITIES (with Ars Virtua and Huret & Spector Gallery) and LUMENS (with Greylock Arts and MCLA Gallery 51); co-presented two symposia FLOATING POINTS 5: MIXED REALITIES (with Emerson College) and PROGRAMMABLE MEDIA II: NETWORKED_MUSIC (with Pace Digital Gallery); co-presented UPGRADE! BOSTON (with Massachusetts College of Art and Design); and participated in Upgrade! International: CHAIN REACTION (Skopje Macedonia).
WE WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO CONTINUE, BUT CANNOT WITHOUT YOUR HELP.
No amount is too small!
Pay via PayPal on Turbulence or send a check to New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc., 124 Bourne Street, Roslindale, MA 02131.
Thanks for your generous support.
Warm Regards,
Jo-Anne Green and Helen Thorington,
Co-directors, New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc.

FYI
//--------------------------------------------------------------------->
Askeby, Denmark, December 18th. 2008 The Danish composer and Fluxus-artist
Henning Christiansen has passed away. Tuesday night (December 10th)
Henning Christansen quietly passed away after a short suffering of
apoplexy. He leaves behind his wife Ursula Reuter Christiansen, four
children and grandchildren not to mention an overwhelming production of
compositions and art works from the 60's until today. Henning
Christiansen was active as a composer from the 60's as well as an active
member of the Fluxus-movement. He worked with artists such as Joseph Beuys
and Nam June Paik as well as with his wife Ursula Reuter Christiansen.
His overall goal was to work collaboratively and to trespass conventional
boundaries. He resented the idea of an isolated artistic genius and his
entire production can be seen as a subsequent and vibrant example of
praxis in a constant flux. This is visible from his engagement in Fluxus,
over numerous collaborative performances to his position as a professor at
the Art Academy in Hamburg. Henning Christiansen remained active till the
very last day. He presented a large retrospective exhibition last year in
Copenhagen, last month he participated in the music festival Wundergrund,
and is currently showing in Berlin at Gelbe Music and at the Nordic
Embassies. A book on the lifework of Henning Christiansen is being made at
this very moment and is due in the spring 2009. Henning Christiansen
resided almost 40 years on the Danish Island Møn. He was 76 year old at
his passing and the funeral is Thursday, December 18th at 1 pm in
Fanefjord Church. For further information please contact Bjornstjerne

CreativeFreedom.org.nz Launches With Campaign Against Guilt Upon
Accusation Laws In NZ
The Creative Freedom Foundation launches today in New Zealand to unite
artists who are against the removal of New Zealander's rights through
proposed changes in Copyright law, done in the name of protecting
creativity.
The Creative Freedom Foundation's first campaign is against a proposed
law in New Zealand: Section 92 of the Copyright Amendment Act. S92
assumes 'Guilt Upon Accusation' – cutting off internet connections and
websites based on accusations of Copyright infringement, without
evidence or even a trial.
Foundation Co-Founder and Director, Bronwyn Holloway-Smith says:
"The result of this law could be that one rogue employee or even one
virus infected computer could bring down a whole organisation's internet
and it's highly likely that schools, businesses, hospitals, and phone
services will be harmed by this."
On 28 February 2009, S92 will come into effect in New Zealand if there
is no positive action on the part of the Government to change it. To
date the Government has shown support for the bill and, unless there is
major public protest against it, it will "roll over" in to law.
Although the Creative Freedom Foundation has just launched, it is
already gathering steady support. Artist, Curator, and PHD Candidate Dan
Untitled says:
"25% of computers are infected with viruses that download and distribute
material without the owners knowledge. What if that owner is a school or
hospital? Clearly, this situation is ridiculous. Laws like this are
outrageous, and as an artist I don't want them done in my name. For me,
the decision to support the CFF was clear cut. What they are doing is
fantastic – I fully endorse it, and encourage others to as well."
A petition against /Guilt Upon Accusation/ laws in New Zealand has been
started by the Foundation. It can be signed on their website:

Neural magazine celebrates 15 years of publishing with issue #31 and
joining S.W.A.M.P. group (Doug Easterly and Matt Kenyon) for a
collective micro-printing action.
Subscribers will receive a numbered/limited edition of a S.W.A.M.P.'s
"Notepad" sheet of paper with an envelope. It looks like an everyday
yellow legal paper, but each line is constructed of micro-printed text
and contains the personal details of Iraqi civilian casualties.
Subscribers are triggered to write a letter or memo or draw a picture
on it and send it to the White House, then signing up for a free
replacement sheet on the S.W.A.M.P. website, if they want. Once in
circulation each sheet then acts as a "Trojan horse" - slipping the
unwanted and unacknowledged civilian body count data into official
governmental archives.
This is a joint action that proves how paper and pixel together can
make the difference.

Still a chance to get in on the southern hemisphere's chance to mark our

If you need a shortcut. We're asking for abstracts in the first instance,
and full papers later if you want them refereed for the conference
proceedings, after which we'll be cherry picking for various publications

asks you to attach the whole paper)

earlier, but life is a bow-woow (though I have to say my bow-wow is still
living the life of Riley, which begs the question whose life Riley has ended

hanging about in the rain and chasing rabbits)

Super Human Symposium Call for Abstracts
Super Human Revolution of the Species is an international event
comprising a symposium, exhibition, masterclass and public talk
investigating collaborative art and science practices and their
relationship with the human body.
Symposium abstracts are invited from either individual or team-based
researchers, artists and scientists. Submitted abstracts will undergo a
double-blind referee process, with successful applicants invited to
submit their paper prior to final acceptance.
The Call for abstracts deadline is 20 March 2009.
Taking place in Melbourne on 22 - 25 November 2009, the Super Human
symposium will present an invigorating and inspiring mix of keynote
speakers and collaborative research projects engaging with one or more
of the symposium themes: Augmentation, Cognition and Nanoscale
Interventions.
Questions that the symposium will address include, but are not limited
to: How do scientific and artistic bodies of knowledge intersect with
human, social bodies? Does art serve simply as a representational tool
for the sciences or is there more to the picture than that? Does
research into bodies and their systems offer an insight into
aesthetics, or is it confined to the purely functional?
Please visit http://www.anat.org.au/events/119 to download the pdf.
Please submit all abstracts (and any questions) to the Conference
Convenor: as(a)anat.org.au.
