Hi everyone,
We're delighted to announce that the 101010 showreel is now online,
along with other reviews and documentations from the 101010 UpStage
Festival, at http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=1662. The showreel has
excerpts from the festival performances as well as overview information
about UpStage. Thanks very much to Dan for his editing work, to the
artists who recorded performances and screengrabs, and of course to all
of 101010 artists, whose work is featured in the showreel :)
We'd also like to thank the artists from the three shows which played
again on Sunday 16th January, as part of the "Art's Birthday"
celebrations around the world. It was great to see "MASS-MESS" and
"Recipes" again, and to see "Strings Attached 2" for the first time, as
technical problems prevented it from playing during 101010.
The next event in UpStage will be an *open meeting** on **Wednesday 2
February*; you are all warmly invited to attend. It will be at 9am
European time, 9pm NZ time (find your local time here
<http://tinyurl.com/6z599o9>).
This meeting is to talk about what's happening with UpStage: how we'd
like it to develop in the future and how we can make that happen. "We"
includes YOU -- anyone who has been involved with UpStage in the past
AND anyone who is interested in getting involved. UpStage is an open
source project created by artists, for artists. It is currently unfunded
and depends on the work of volunteers to keep going. Interested people
are always welcome to get involved and contribute in whatever way you can.
Come to the swaray stage <http://upstage.org.nz:8084/stages/swaray> on
Wednesday 2nd February and share what you think about UpStage and its
future. If you want to contribute but can't attend this meeting, don't
worry: we'll post the log on the web site and you can email
info(a)upstage.org.nz <mailto:info@upstage.org.nz> to share your thoughts
and ideas.
We hope to see many of you at the meeting, or hear from you before or after.

SCANZ 2011: Eco sapiens
http://www.intercreate.org/hui-symposium/
'If success or failure of the planet and of human beings depended on
how I am and what I do ... How would I be? What would I do?'
Buckminster Fuller, 1958
Hi,
Following from a range of discussions occurring over three SCANZ events, and a request from the organisers of ISEA 2011 Istanbul to curate a selection of Aotearoa New Zealand work, the concept below was pitched, which the ISEA organisers accepted. Consequently we are looking for projects relevant to the areas given below. The time frame is short but we encourage you to think about submitting a project.
[uncontainable{second nature}]
Call for projects to be exhibited at ISEA 2011 Istanbul, September 2011
The works in [uncontainable{second nature}] address nature in environmentally orientated work mediated by digital or computer based expression. The concept of environment spans the cosmological scale to the local environment. Given the notion of environment is pivotal, Maori conceptions are included in the scope of ideas.
Interestingly some aspects of Maori and Western cosmology match at the level of summary detail. While the respective thinking of each culture was arrived at based on different premises, the notion that all is energy for example, can be located within quantum physics and the concept of mauri. This has prompted a consideration of what other similarities might be present in the beliefs of the two cultures.
Following presentations at ISEA 2006 in San Jose, the SCANZ 2009: Raranga tangata symposium which addressed Interconnections, and the recent SCANZ 2011: Eco sapiens hui at Owae marae, it is time for discussions that have occurred formally and informally, to be brought forward with a suite of creative projects based one or more of the themes below.
1. Cosmological context
This is the conception that the sphere of investigation includes the macroscopic level of stars, suns, planets and stellar systems. Digital works of art and science are sought.
2. All is energy.
Energistic conceptions of nature range from quantum theory to the Maori notion that all physical objects (animate and inanimate) have 'mauri' or energy. Works of art and scientific research in New Zealand are sought.
3. Anthropic principle
The anthropic principle arises as part of sub-nuclear physics and the concept is embedded within Maori understanding. Here it refers broadly to the relationship of humans to the cosmos. As well as art works, explanatory information about the anthropic principle among Maori and in Western science will be displayed.
4. Integrated systems
The whole of Maori belief is an integrated system, and this is also instantiated in Systems thinking, Cybernetics and Chaos theory. Artworks are sought and explanatory information displayed.
5. Life comes from water
Both Taranaki Maori and the contemporary scientific view hold that life emerged or emerges from water. This will be exemplified in projects and information panels.
This is a unique moment in the relationship of the two main cultures of Aotearoa. Centuries of thinking provide a background for an exhibition that is relevant to the environment, culturally inclusive in premise, digitally mediated and presenting pinnacles of creative, scientific and meta physical thinking across the cultural boundary. A catalogue will be produced.
Unfortunately works previously exhibited at ISEA are not eligible. Only Maori and New Zealanders are eligible to apply however Maori and New Zealanders living overseas can apply.
To apply:
1. Write a project description (max 500 words) and where possible attach electronically an image of the work (maximum file size2Mb).
2. Write an explanation which details how the proposed work meets one or more of the themes (max 300 words).
3. State the exhibition requirements of the work.
4. Provide a one page CV and contact details
5. Email above to: ian.clothier(a)intercreate.org by Friday February 11th 2011. It is appreciated that this is a short deadline but anticipated that most works will be already created. Proposals are required by this time in order to prepare for a major funding application.

Auckland based artist Stella Brennan presents “Instant Pictures”, a

hairs, scratches and dust particles.

In January 2010, we helped to celebrate Art’s Birthday
<http://www.artsbirthday.net/> with a party in UpStage
<http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?p=742>. This year, since we were already
discussing when would be a good time to restage some of the performances
from the 101010 UpStage Festival
<http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=680>, we’ve decided to hold “101010
again” in conjunction with Art’s Birthday, 16-17 January 2011.
There will be three shows on Sunday 16 January: two performances of
/Strings Attached 2: Who's driving this thing?/
<http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=1019#strings> by by Cindi L’Abbe
and performers (USA/Korea); and one performance of /MASS-MESS
<http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=1043#mass-mess> /by Katarina DJ.
Urosevic & Jelena Lalic, Serbia. There will be live links to the stages
from the UpStage web site <http://upstage.org.nz/> 15 minutes before
show times, which are:
* 2am Europe (10am Korean time): /Strings Attached 2: Who's driving
this thing?/ (find your local time here
<http://http//tinyurl.com/3yjffjn>)
* 1pm Europe (9pm Korean time):/Strings Attached 2: Who's driving
this thing? /(find your local time here <http://tinyurl.com/3xza5z9>)
* 7pm Europe: /MASS-MESS /(find your local time here
We’re very much looking forward to /Strings Attached 2/
<http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=1019#strings>, as it was the one
show from 101010 that didn’t get to perform due to an annoying
combination of different technical problems. An experiment in
audience-performer communication, /Strings Attached 2/ invites real-time
feedback from the audience as triggers for the choreography. This is
another stage of the performance /Strings Attached
<http://dilettantedance.blogspot.com/2010/05/strings-attached-experiment-in.…>/
which Cindi began in August 2009.
/MASS-MESS <http://upstage.org.nz/blog/?page_id=1043#mass-mess> /is by
veteran UpStage artists Katarina DJ. Urosevic & Jelena Lalic (Serbia),
and explores the meaningless complexity of the images and visual symbols
that saturate contemporary life. Sunday's performance will be given to
an audience at KC Grad <http://www.gradbeograd.eu/programi.php?lang=sr>
in Belgrade as well as online.
Visit the Art's Birthday web site <http://www.artsbirthday.net/> to find
out about other events happening online and locally.
hope to see you at the shows,
helen : )
