Trudy – conversation developing out of scanz – lot of ideas
Adam – trying to recognize the appropriate form for a media lab for
new Zealand – very distributed, overseas labs – some chaotic (e.g.
deckspace in London), others more organised, as in the Netherlands.
What is it that ‘we’ could want here?
Zita – imporatant to acknowledge ourselves as a distributed
network – perhaps with different kinds of nodes in different
places. – as a site of information – somewhere to go to find out
Janine – not appropriate to be a resource base, to be more
flexible. – to be able to mobilize other people’s resources:
Su – not based in an architecture
Julian – other networks? Linux?
Website as a resource hub?
Julian – physical spaces – in Jossland in the Netherlands, a drop-
in self-help centre in basement of a sports hall turned into a
province-wide wireless network serving 15 000 households. In Berlin
– seabase – reconstructing a spaceship… hackerlab – coders and
media artists – backspace, media shed. Physical spaces without
poplulation density – containers, vans, movable spaces, a traveling
infrastructure – regular meetings, time together, events. Wireless
networking event – no-one travels beyond their region – reducing
costs to attend.
Su – trust facilitates, rather than is something. Not fixing
anything too early.
Zita – likes idea of traveling national symposium – like to think
that similar meetings could happen elsewhere.
Julian - Stringing together things that are already there – making
sure that members are present at different events –
Su – should have been more identifiably ada at medianz.
Adam – physical space helps to break out of closed social circle –
mumma in croatia – draws community in. people work within that space.
Julian – want to have a shop front as part of next project –
don’t want to be locked away behind the scenes.
Zita – openness of an actual physical space – Audio Foundation
office in St Kevins arcade, part of audio foundation archiving
project – access point –
Alex – silent observer of ADA – small group – posts are relevant
to subscribers – members are outside of institutions, but connected
Su – we end up teaching to support ourselves – have access to
Alex – people are connected to so many institutions here –
Frances – discussing development of Creative Media Lab with AUT and
Su – is this something that is operating nationally?
Frances – yes, depending on partner institutions.
Zita – definitely worth discussing.
Julian – retrospective funding? The projects where I’ve had to
wait for funding have been problematic.
Frances – artists don’t access research and technology funding.
Su – output ethos is a problem – how can we shift to a more
Su – bring visitors over and work them too hard.
General consensus, partnerships good. AUT project good. Issue is
infrastructure. Need to use institutions.
Opening of conversation about conference.
Putting a series of conferences back to back? Will continue on-line.
Bringing international people?? Su will continue conversations with
Initial signing and toasting of the (nearly finished) Trust Document.
