Ian Clothier from New Plymouth here. I have just come back from ISEA 2004.
Since festival/symposia are the subject at the moment, I thought it best to
let people know we are in the early stages of organising a Solar Circuit in
New Plymouth in July 2006, immediately prior to ISEA 2006 San Jose. It seems
likely there will be some kind of tie up between the two events, and this is
being discussed now.
I'm in touch with a range of people and organisations in NZ, USA, Australia,
Canada and Europe about this. The concept has the support in principle of
two New Plymouth based arts/cultural institutions.
However, in terms of building a culture of 'new media' practice here in NZ,
perhaps considering that there is an ADA symposium in 2005, and a Solar
Circuit in 2006, followed by ISEA 2006 (which is co-ordinating a Pacific Rim
New Media Summit) might be a good way to look at things.

i won't be back in time for the symposium this october & have no idea
where i'll be next october, but it would be great to have a festival
& i'll second adam's suggestions.
h : )
sounds good :)
any chance for remote input? and maybe a live stream of the proceedings?
as for the festival idea...i think there shoudl be discussion about a
festival for, say, late 2005 ... this could be good timing as the ISEA
2006 festival to be held in San Jose will, as one of its major foci,
include the Pacific
Curators (Especially Steve Dietz) will be looking for projects to include
and it could be very strategic to hold something to showcase work and
discourse and invite teh ISEA crew amongst others...
ISEA is not the only reason to hold a festival in this time but just a
suggestion as it would seem timely and could be good for nz/pacific
a model that could work would be to do it in conjunction with Australian
organisations...essentially, approach several .au entities with the idea
of a festival and utlise their resources to hold part of the fest. in
australia, then the nz part of the fest could just need to find funds to
jump people across the ditch (say from sydney to ak)...making it more
affordable all round....
starting point is some dosh for a director and go from there...lets say a
minimum seeding point of $40,000 NZ for director wage and expenses to
cover 6 months in which time the director would need to get hold of more
funds to keep the show on the road...
these are just a few 'off the top of my head' ideas....i am really excited
about this possibility, but I have learnt with time that sometimes my
ideas just arent infectious ;) ...but i would be interested to see if the
idea was interesting to an ADA symposium, till then i will 'keep the ice
under my hat' as they say in finnland (wierdos)
