Tēnā koutou katoa,
At *11am today*, the University will run a lockdown drill on both campuses.
As you are a valued part of our University community, it’s important for us
that we let you know what to expect.
The drill will last for a maximum of 10 minutes. It is being held to test
the University’s emergency management and response systems. The best way to
do this is to simulate a threat to the University.
On the Hamilton campus, there will be a three minute siren. On the Tauranga
campus, there will be a PA announcement. All internal and external access
controlled doors will be locked, and swipe card access will not be
possible. However door release buttons will work from the inside.
In a scenario like this, Police will have been informed and we have
instructed staff and students to take the following action:
- Close windows and curtains or blinds, lock doors, move away from
windows and stay where you are
- If you are outside, run, hide, and tell someone where you are
- If you are offsite, stay away
Because this is a simulation, those outside will not need to hide or
During the drill, we will communicate with staff and students through both
text message alerts and via notifications from our WaikatoUni app.
The WaikatoUni app
is a key component of our emergency response. We recommend anyone in our
University community download the app
use a ‘guest’ profile and enable notifications to receive these alerts.
We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience this may cause to you and
thank you for your patience.
