The Netforum conference for 2003 is scheduled for July 10,11,12.
The Theme of the conference is
Next Generation Internet: Advanced Network Operations
and
Computer Networking in Aviation
The conference will be extremely technical with >2/3 content devoted to advanced networking and related topics.
Speakers are invited to submit proposals for papers to the conference committee by sending a synopsis and Title to "netforum(a)fx.net.nz".
We look forward to an expanded conference in 2003, and the conference committee will be working very hard to meet or exceed the standard set by the 2002 conference, which I hope many of you enjoyed.
The committee looks forward to receiving proposals.
====================================================================
In a similar manner, attendees are welcome to suggest topics or papers they are interested in seeing, and the conference organisers will then be able to help persuade likely speakersto stump up a talk. Send to "suggestions(a)fx.net.nz"

Anyone at Xtra going to do anything about this crowd? I've already sent
in two complaints to abuse@xtra (and got nice letters back even) and they
just sent me another spam with a promise of another to come.
I notice they even spam IDG:
http://www.idg.net.nz/webhome.nsf/printdoc/BEA9EAEA8C0900DACC256C7B0077ACE4…
I've blocked them now but I'd really prefer that Xtra was a little more....

Three weeks ago, I asked NZNOG subscribers who expect to attend to express a preference for a conference with UniForum broadly similar to last year's on one hand, or a lower-cost gathering hosted by The University of Waikato. In counting votes, I have ignored those received from UniForum members who are not subscribed to this list.
The envelope, please ...
Preferring UniForum: 16
Preferring Waikato: 13
Will attend either, not worried: 6
Volunteering to help: 3
I'm inclined to conclude from this that we do not have a clear majority for either option, or more positively that we have quite a bit of interest in both.
The three volunteering to help were two who favoured the UniForum option and one who would attend either. Partly for that reason, partly in the interests of getting an event under away sooner rather than later, and partly because it worked last time, I believe we should proceed with the UniForum option.
It is also clear that we have significant interest in an alternative, and I believe that should be followed up, possibly for February 2004. One longer-term question would be whether 2004 could support two events, one at Waikato and another jointly with UniForum in the Wellington region.
Unless I hear significant numbers of complaints soon, I'll seek to follow up who's doing what with UniForum's convenor, Roger De Salis, and those who've volunteered; and myself contact The University of Waikato with a view to working out some details for a later conference. One of my aims here is to have decisions about the conference after next made not later than during the next conference.

The NZNOG mailing list has run since the mid-90's (yes, it has been that long) using Majordomo list management software. The list will shortly be migrating to using the rather more current mailman v2.1 instead.
The address to which mail for the list is to be sent will not change. Archive collection will continue as before, though with minor changes to the layout of the web pages generated. The process for subscribing or unsubscribing will change, and will in future use a password. These are to be generated automatically in the first case, and sent out to subscribers as the migration proceeds later today.
One significant change affecting a few people is that the nznog-postonly list will cease to exist. Instead, it will be possible to subscribe an address to the main nznog list and specify that that address is not to receive mail. This is to be done automatically for the addresses now subscribed to nznog-postonly. An unfortunate result of the automatic process used is that each address will have a different initial password assigned. I suspect you'll cope.
OK, Colin, take it away ...

That would have something to do with this announcement:

So receiving a welcome message is perfectly normal. If you didn't get one
and didn't get this message either you should probably contact the list
adminstrator....[0]

Woo hoo! Thanks.
You and about 8 others have told me about the message I deleted
without reading. If I have no time to read them, I just delete them.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to have missed it.

I some how doubt that a six year old address @student.canterbury.ac.nz
will be much use. Anyone know of a contact -- one address in this block is
infected with slammer worm...

Cheers everyone,
this is a request for help in the interest of research / community.
For the past four years the WAND network research group at the
University of Waikato has been hosting the only skitter system
in the South Pacific rim.
http://www.caida.org/tools/measurement/skitter/
The system measures and displays a number of important network
properties on a global scale and tracks changes on short, medium
and long time scales.
Waikato has been the beacon on the map, making sure NZ shows up
on the radar screen of the Internet (research) community. The
problem in running a skitter system is with the amount of
traffic generated, it can easily exceed 1 GByte per day, and
with traffic charging in place, this adds up to something like
NZ$50,000 per annum for us. We have been coping with a mix of
external and internal funding, but those sources have finally
dried out. The sad result is that we had to shut down the system
last week. No backup solutions so far.
This note to you to explore if any of you have an idea on
alternative placements, preferably with no volume charging
in place at all, or, with a nominal fee. There is little
chance we can keep operating a machine here in NZ if the
amount of funding required is going to be substancial.
Thanks.
Joerg
