I've got a few servers in my home right now, which have come a couple of
clients in the CBD. They'll VPN into them for the next week or three.
Telstra tell me that the only way they can provision additional IPs to
my cable modem is to convert it to a business plan, and that there will
be a three month lead time. Not too helpful. Technically I know it
can be done - we used to do this in Wellington, but for the bureaucracy....
Is there any other provider that could do something in the near future
with this? None of the servers are rack mountable, so not great
candidates for a DC really. DSL isn't currently connected to this site,
but the local cabinet is approx 20m across the road.
Just letting you know that voyager currently has three technical staff on the ground in chch
We are here helping our customers with data recovery, porting numbers to IP so people can work from home, and getting some wireless hotspots up and running for Tomizone
If we can be assistance to any other telcos / ISPs etc while we are down here please get in touch.

The Citylink switch that all but one of the participants in the CHIX connect to will likely lose power as the generator in the building it is housed in dies sometime in the next couple of days. We have notified those who we believe are actively shifting traffic over this exchange so this is just a FYI to anyone else who is interested.
Sorry I'm all the way up in Sweden but the thought had crossed my mind that
bringing up as many cell sites as possible off battery backup would / could
save lives if there are still people trapped in buildings with cellphones.
Perhaps anyone with knowledge of people with local portable generators could
help out (?). Probably messy but if it brings up even a few cell sites in
central it could help (maybe this has already been done).
People should feel free to use this list for asking and offering help
regarding the recent Christchurch earthquake.
Establishing and maintaining communication is going to be essential over
the next few days and I'm sure I speak for all NZNOG participants when I
say that whatever help we can provide people on the ground will be
Just let the community know what you need.
You are not crazy, Yes, I noticed out of the hundreds of servers we
operate, alot of issues during the solar flare period.
For those net ops who are new to solar flare issues; here are some
interesting links of late:
Feel free to meet up with me, I love talking solar storms (need a lead
