I forward this message to you, because - for people, who are interested in
this field - this is a remarkable opportunity....!!!
In the week February 9 – 13, the Department of General and Applied
Linguistics will be hosting Professor Frans de Laet, the former director of
the School of Interpreting and Translation in Brussels, and now at a
Graduate School of Interpreting and Translation in southern Taiwan.
Professor de Laet is currently the Secretary General of FIT/IFT
International Federation of Translators. The purpose of Professor de Laet's
visit to the University of Waikato is to investigate the possibility of
offering interpreting and/or translation as a qualification at Waikato, and
we are anxious that those who have an interest in this development, or who
would be keen to meet with Professor de Laet have that opportunity.
Currently, there are a number of different sessions planned for his time at
Waikato that may be of interest to people:
1. A workshop morning on Tuesday 10 February beginning at 9.00 am to
discuss interpreting and translation studies as a strategic development at
the University of Waikato with interested staff. (Meeting room on Ground
Floor of J Block unless otherwise notified).
2. A public lecture in KG 07 at 10.00 am on Wednesday 11 February.
3. A workshop for interpreters and translators from 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm
on Wednesday 11 February in KG07.
4. An opportunity for Maori interpreters and translators to meet with
Professor de Laet on Thursday 12 February. (Details to be announced)
There are spaces during the week where Professor de Laet would be available
for individual appointments, so if you wish to see him, please email Diane
Johnson (dianej(a)waikato.ac.nz) to arrange a time.
Please contact me if you need any further information. (Extn 6999)
With best wishes,
