After a relatively quiet Spring, several activities have been planned for the coming
semester. These include:
Presentations & Inaugural Meeting of the Education Chapter of the PGSA - Wednesday
August 4th 5:30 p.m., WEL Academy of Performing Arts, Upstairs Lounge.
The meeting will begin with three shorts talks. Associate Professor and Pro Vice
Chancellor David Swain will speak about his 35 years out of 40 years at Waikato
University. Des a PhD student will be talking on life as an Adult student through
undergrad, Masters and into his PhD thesis. And Emily Gesner an international student in
the School of Education will present a brief presentation about the history of the PGSA at
Waikato over the past 3 years.
The presentation will be followed by a general meeting to welcome new members to the group
and discuss PGSA general business. Although forming a chapter for the School of Education
will hopefully be an outcome of this meeting; students from all seven schools are heartily
encouraged to attend.
PGSA Social Night at HOME Bar. – Wednesday Aug 4th, 2004; 7p.m. onwards at HOME Bar,
Silverdale Road. All graduate and post-graduate students are invited to meet other grads
in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
PGSA Overnight at Te Kohinga Marama – Wednesday Aug 11th, 2004; 5 p.m. to the following
morning (so bring sleeping gear). The PGSA will be holding an overnight retreat for
members and their families to get to know each other and plan upcoming association

The graduation of several longtime members mean that a variety of opportunities exist for
new members to to get involved. The association invites you to:
- join the PGSA executive to represent your department/school
- help with website updates, the mailing list and other communication ventures
- plan social events
- recruit new members
- assist with long-term planning
- try your hand at writing grant proposals, media releases
- lobby the university to establish a Graduate Student Center
- coordinate networking with other campuses
