Hello all,
Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip
address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote
administration?
I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program,
report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to
log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how
to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration
at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the
router config part.
It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to
the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am
guessing all this is possible.
Cheers
Is there any sort of program (or simple set up) that will automatically record
from a *.m3u stream at a particular hour? I.e. like a video recorder.
I want to listen to British radio shows that are on at silly hours of the NZ
morning:
http://resonancefm.com/listen
--Glyn
I set up a user with a trial of Ubuntu, an external modem, and a KOL
connection. (Would be lovely to have broadband, but in this situation
broadband is "not on").
Dialup seems to be changing! I had a few problems during testing
connecting to Xtra (see http://wlug.org.nz/Xtra ) ... Xtra's prompts
upset wvdial. I thought "Oh well, if I can get Xtra to connect, I
ought to be able to get KOL to talk using the same technique".
Trying the usual methods of connecting didn't give any joy, so I used
putty to find out what was happening. Name and Password was fine, but
then KOL responded with a binary string, repeated every second or so,
6th byte incrementing, for a while and then disconnected. The string
is ...
ff 03 c0 21 01 dc 00 12 01 04 7f d5 03 04 c0 23 05 06 77 2d 1d b1
(dc was the byte that incremented with each message)
Is this familiar to anyone? I haven't rung KOL as the website claims
no support for Linux, and I wouldn't expect normal help-desk staff to
be able to answer that query anyway. At worst, I've donated, $10 to
KOL!
Now that the user has the computer, I've got to set up another one for
testing. :-) (Not a problem!)
Any suggestions?
Michael
Thank you, all.
I'll be watching the Debian forums and the "debian-user" mailing list now. I
didn't know about them. (I'm watching at "debian-user" via Gmane.org's NNTP
feed - KNode is nicer to use than Google Groups.)
I'm using KDE 3.5 on Debian Lenny. "update-notifier" *says* it will work on
KDE. I've followed the advice I just found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=27109
I think what it says to do is the command-line equivalent to using "System >
Preferences > Session", which isn't there in Debian.
"update-notify" is running in the background now, and a grey icon appeared
(and disappeared) in the KDE System Tray. I'll wait for an update to come up
and see what happens. If nothing, I'll subscribe to "debian-user" and ask.

Thanks for the speedy info.
The guys on dd-wrt reckon you may be OK if you implemented strong password.
Maybe add a the relevant IP/DNS to a blacklist & remove all tools to download code, like wget, "busybox ftpget" & tftp.
Disable ssh & access from outside (besides via VPN).

I expect we'll see a patch soon (considering how soon a patch cam out after the "Kaminski bug")

Got a 2008 financial hangover? Let MSN NZ Money help you recover.
http://money.msn.co.nz
Where do I go on the Internet ask general questions about Debian Lenny?
(The question is: I've installed 'update-notifier', but it never notifies me
of any package updates. The README gives me a feeling I'm supposed to set
something up, but I'm not sure what or how.)
--Glyn
Global-Pix.com runs several websites, including the Marathon-Photos.com
site. In 2008 we photographed more than 2 million athletes in over 450
events through 30 countries - taking more than 6 million images and
recording over a thousand hours' worth of video footage.
Due to expansion, we are looking for a Programmer to join our small
development team based at our office in Hamilton. In this position, you
would help maintain and program our back-end systems. While there will be
some system administration tasks to be done, the majority of your time
will be spent working on software features.
We are looking for someone with a minimum of 3 years' programming
experience, particularly with the Python programming language.
In addition, experience in either of the two following areas would be a
distinct advantage:
1) System Administration - for example:
* Server internals (eg RAID, SATA, UPSes)
* Debian GNU/Linux administration experience
* LAN management (configuration, DNS/bind, diagnostics, etc)
* Centralised account management - LDAP, SMB, SSH
or
2) Video Processing - for example:
* good knowledge of video formats and codecs
* familiarity with command line video processing tools (eg ffmpeg)
* streaming video
Salary is negotiable based on skillset and experience. Our office has
a small and friendly atmosphere near the middle of the CBD.
Please send email to vacancies(a)global-pix.com to apply or request further
information. If you reply to this email, beware of the default "Reply-To"
header on the WLUG list.
