Hello all,
Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip
address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote
administration?
I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program,
report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to
log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how
to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration
at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the
router config part.
It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to
the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am
guessing all this is possible.
Cheers
A reminder; the WLUG Fixit Meeting is tomorrow.

SaturdayWorkshop at Te Whanau Pūtahi (http://zoomin.co.nz/map/nz/hamilton/fairfield/-te+whanau+ptahi/), the community church at the end of Oxford Street.
We'll have the usual tables, power, various ISO's, Internet, coffee and light lunch, etc.
It appears that you are correct. I had not expected such a
long buffer period.
It still, however causes rythmbox to lock up solid for some
reason.

I have changed to my desktop ubuntu 8.10 in the hope a more
modern installation would help.
Having run through the list of available streaming radio
stations and successfully playing a large random selection.
the exception being thecoast.net.nz when opened in firefox
claims to need adobe flash-plugin. Flash-plugin is installed
so there must be some other thing that I do not have that
prevents this station playing.

That is fine the buffer situation is understood. I do not
wish to listen to a twin computer simulcast and am happy
with just one. However it happened that my friend was
listening to the station I have been endeavoring to get
running for the past three days so we drew a comparison.
Regards John
PS I will attempt to run rythmbox tomorrow

I just opened firefox and did tools/pageinfo/media down to
the link Peter sent me. I copied the link into the browser
and "Voila" it played. My friend was at a windows computer
playing the same stream as I but his was playing 20/30
seconds ahead of my stream for some reason???????? Any
helpful comments appreciated.

Do you recommend that I un-install install the flash-plugin/
to see if that solves the problem I have the version in
synaptic which is 10.22.87-2 intrepid?

Just to make it interesting I now have the stream working in
pretty well in firefox. A sad problem is that it is
absolutely silent for some strange reason, not good for a
radio stream. Vlc seems not to be working at all (no data
transfer) even though the url seems to be in the correct
place.....

OK,
I followed the instructions given and found rythmbox
defaults to "paused" when the play is actioned ( by
doubleclick or play radio ) then total lock-up occurs and
forced quit is needed. I tried the same thing in Amarok but
the stream would not play giving a "there is no audio
channel" error. Both players do a play other streams but not
the one I would like to hear.
Regards john
