Hello all,
Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip
address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote
administration?
I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program,
report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to
log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how
to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration
at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the
router config part.
It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to
the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am
guessing all this is possible.
Cheers
Hi
I have an agp card with "fx5200" written on the back however
it only has a vga and a video out plug. I guess we are
talking on different levels as I am not really a geek just
trying to be helpful. If it is of some use to you just let
me know
regards John

Thanks for your link, Gregory.
Turns out I didn't give enough information in my original post - and after
thinking of the right terms, a Google search found the problem. I was
affected by bug 477104, fix and cause here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/477104 in case it will
help someone.
I was running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 via Wubi (critical missing info in
my original email). Wubi + kernel update = broken grub2 & left at
bootloader. In the future, I'll need to follow any major updates by running
sudo update-grub2.
If this happens to anyone else, I fixed it by running:
> set root=(hd0,1)
> loopback loop0 /ubuntu/disks/root.disk
> set root=(loop0)
> linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic root=/dev/sda1
loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro
> initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-17-generic
> boot
Once Ubuntu booted successfully, I had to run sudo update-grub2 to prevent
the issue from recurring at next boot.
Obviously, the versioning will vary; I also had to rollback to the previous
version of vmlinuz and initrd. I've seen comments that the first 2 lines
aren't necessary, but I needed them on my system.
Hope this helps someone out in the future!
Cheers,
- Eric
I missed the "f" out of if :(

Hi All,
Will someone please explain what I need to do to write and
run a C program in the bash terminal.I think I may need to
tell the terminal to run a c compiler. This is the outcome
of a program I copied from a tutorial.
john@sniffy:~$ #include <stdio.h>
john@sniffy:~$ int main()
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('
I there is an easy to understand explanation I would like to
hear it please..
Regards John

Over 600 Linux geeks gathered for LinuxConfAu (http://www.lca2010.org.nz/), down in Wellington last month. Four WLUG members were among them, and will be giving short talks/presentations about what was cool and interesting at the conference. Attendees were LizQuilty, JohnBillings, StephenHeywood and RonnieCollinson.

Hi,
My Brother HL-2140 printer which has been working perfectly has suddenly stopped
working. I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 on amd64 which I keep up to date and I guess it
was due to a recent update, but I don't use it all that much so I don't know
exactly when it got broken.
I enabled debug logging in cups and it shows that something is seg faulting. The
log is posted here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8846976
Anyone have any advice about how to fix it?
Glenn

Hi everyone,
Well the subject line says it all... There was an update yesterday that came
in for Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10). Downloaded, installed, rebooted, and
now I just get dumped into Grub. Immediately before the Grub screen comes
up, it quickly flashes something that MAY be the words "Try hdd(0,0) NTFS".
Then I get the sh:grub> prompt.
OK So I don't know anything about Grub or what I'm doing in it. I've typed
ls and I get: (loop0), (hd0), and (hd0,1). I tried boot /vmlinuz, and I
get "Error: no loaded kernel"; tried linux /vmlinuz, and I get "Error:
wrong magic number". Not sure what else I should try.
Does anyone have any advice to get my netbook up and running again? I'm
back to Windows 7 Starter! (argh, argh, argh)
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
- Eric
Hello,
I am looking to build a MythTV box for a friend using a satellite card
to capture/watch/record Freeview.
I've already got my own box working.
Prior to HD, I understand the Nvidia GeForce FX5200 was considered a
good graphics card and is infact what I use (more by luck than
design). It has an TV-OUT RCA socket.
Would anyone on the list have something like that spare that they
would be willing to sell?
If you wish to reply, please reply to me off list.
Cheers,
Chris
