Hello all,
Is there a tool in ubuntu that a user can start that reports the real world ip
address and configures a home router to open a port to allow remote
administration?
I have a friend or two for whom it would nice to get them to start a program,
report to me the details via MSN or Skype or telephone etc and allow me to
log in and fix or make a configuration change to their machine. I know how
to set things up using ssh etc but that relies on some initial configuration
at the their end. KDE has a nice VNC invite function but it won't do the
router config part.
It appears the likes of KTorrent and Azuereus have the ability to do some to
the router via UPnP to open ports up on the router dynamically so I am
guessing all this is possible.
Cheers
A reminder; the WLUG Fixit Meeting is tomorrow.

Saturday Mar 6th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
SaturdayWorkshop at Te Whanau Pūtahi (http://www.wlug.org.nz/TeWhanauPutahi), the community church at the end of Oxford Street.
We'll have the usual tables, power, various ISO's, Internet, coffee and light lunch, etc.
I formatted and reinstalled Linux this morning, so as to remove the
possibility I have accidently changed a file. Here is the result of
changing my route table:
route -F add default gw 169.254.214.162
[169.254.214.162 is the IPv4 address of my windows machine.]
glenn@glenn-desktop:/sbin$ route

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use
Iface

glenn@glenn-desktop:/sbin$ route -F add default gw 169.254.214.162

glenn@glenn-desktop:/sbin$ sudo route -F add default gw 169.254.214.162

Does that look in order?

Id love to come down but I'm stuck in Auckland for the moment.

Interesting question: why when I run ifconfig in Windows does the IPv4
default gateway show as my Linux box's IP address??? That's surely not
right. And when I have my network plugged in sometimes my mail fails to
send, as in cant reach server. I wonder if the windows box is looking at
the Linux box as a server. I can't imagine why though.
What ever it is its playing mary hell with my dialup connection.
Glenn.
Just got the word from the people at linmodems that dialup modems are
not supported on 64 bit versions of linux. Thats not catastrophic, I can
use my Windows laptop to connect to the net and internet share across my
home network, until I can get ADSL. Now all I have to do is make my
Linux system communicate with my windows laptop.
I have manually configured my networking settings on my Linux system,
and can ping both ways, but cant get internet sharing up and running. I
think the problem is with settings on my windows laptop.
GLENN.
OK here is the technical stuff:
On my Linux System, Under the edit Connections Tab, I have the following
entered:
Connection Name: Affordable
Wired Network Tab
Mac Address: Empty
MTU: Automatic
802.1x Security
Value: not checked
IPv4 Settings:
Method: manual
Address: 192.168.0.2
Netmask: 255.255.0.2
Gateway: 0.0.0.0
IPv6 Settings:
Method: Ignore.
Interesting note: whatever value I add in the IPv4 Gateway, always ends
up as 0.0.0.0. Shouldn't it be 192.168.0.1?
I have turned my PC's Firewall Off (the default firewall for Vista Home
Premium).
MY PC Network Connection Details:
Connection-Specific DNS: no value
Description: Atheros L2 Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-T Controller
Physical Address: 00-1F-C6-ED-C2-10
DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration IPv4... 169.254.214.162
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
IPv4 Default Gateway: no value
IPv4 DNS Server: no value
IPv4 WINS Server: no value
NetBIOS over TCP En.. Yes
Link Local IPv6 Address: fe80::cb2:5cf7:71e2:d6a2%10
IPv6 Default Gateway:
IPv6 DNS Servers: fec0:0:0.:ffff::1%1
fec0:0:0.:ffff::2%1

MY Kiwi Online Connection Details:
Connection-Specific DNS: no value
Description: Kiwi Online
Physical Address: no value
DHCP Enabled: NO
Autoconfiguration IPv4... 202.150.121.52
IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
IPv4 Default Gateway: no value
IPv4 DNS Server: 210.55.12.1
210.55.12.2
IPv4 WINS Server: no value
NetBIOS over TCP En.. No
In the sharing tab I have ticked Enable Internet Connection Sharing
Home Networking Connection is ticked in the box under properties of
local area network.
If, in my Linux system, if I set the IPv4 settings to DHCP, the
connection doesn't happen and the system remains disconnected. If I open
the connection information box, I get the following:
ACTIVE NETWORK CONNECTIONS
Affordable
Interface: eth0
Hardware Address: 00:26:55:37:81:53
Driver: Forcedeth
Speed: 100MB/s
Security: None
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Broadcast Address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.254.
Although the connection says established, whenever I ping
169.254.214.162 or 192.168.0.1 from my Linux system, it doesn't ping.
Whenever I ping 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 from my Windows system, it says
connection timed out.
I have set my Linux System Network Proxy Settings to Direct Internet
Connection.

Monday night WLUG meeting will be a film screening;
US NOW - http://www.usnowfilm.com/
A film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and
the internet
Us Now follows the fate of Ebbsfleet United, a football club owned and
run by its fans; Zopa, a bank in which everyone is the manager; and
Couch Surfing, a vast online network whose members share their homes
with strangers.
The founding principles of these projects -- transparency,
self-selection, open participation -- are coming closer and closer to
the mainstream of our social and political lives. Us Now describes
this transition and confronts politicians George Osborne and Ed
Milliband with the possibilities for participative government as
described by Don Tapscott and Clay Shirky amongst others.
"Linus likes to joke that the official project goal is world
domination, possibly there is some truth in that. It would nice to get
to the situation where we have democratised knowledge and the ability
to actually contribute and change, particularly information
technology, across the entire world."

There is a problem with the switch connected to the WLUG Blade server.
We are not sure what the problem is, other than some IPs are not working.
We possibly need a new switch. Does anyone have one?
I'm able to schedule a call-out, if someone is able to go to the data
center and replace the switch. A call out will cost us $50 for every
30 min.
Is anyone able to help with this?
Thanks,
