Just in case this helps anyone else...
I've got a different model HP Mini (5150) that I couldn't get to boot from
USB stick. After eventually losing that USB stick, I got a cheapo
replacement from the Warehouse which I could get boot from and installed
full Ubuntu (not netbook edition). Everything seems to work fine.
The point is: if you are having trouble getting your netbook to boot from a
USB stick (assuming your BIOS supports it), it might be worth trying a few
different brands.

Bluetooth seems to be working (can see other
devices).
Not sure when sale ends, so if interested be in quick.
