I've set up an atheros card under debian sarge. These cards need
a kernel module (driver) that has a binary-only component, which
in practice means that it isn't part of the official kernel, and
is often distributed separately.
If you try ubuntu again, you need to install an extra package containing
these extra kernel modules - "linux-restricted-modules". I have
no experience with Mandriva.
The WLUG Wiki has a fair bit of information about setting up

However, these pages describe doing everything from the command-line,
as that works across all distributions. You distribution might have
its own fancy method for installing modules and setting things up through
some graphical setup tool.
